Tom-meka M. Archinard
Background:
I was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana in 1972 and I have had aspirations of becoming a physician since the age of 3. I received my B.S. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Newcomb College of Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, where I was a full scholarship athlete in both basketball and track and was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. I received my M.D. at Wake Forest Medical School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and I served as the SNMA National Vice President as a fourth year medical student. My residency was completed at SUNY-Downstate/Kings County Emergency Department in 2003 where I served as the Resident GME Chairperson for the SUNY-Downstate system and was given the honor of delivering the residents’ graduation address. .I am board-certified in Emergency Medicine with the American Board of Emergency Physicians (ABEM) and working on a certification program for a Masters in Emergency Department Management with the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).
Abstracts and Presentations:
I presented abstracts, “Prevalence of Domestic Violence (DV) Among Emergency Department (ED) Patients,” at the APHA National Conference in Washington, DC in 2004, and “Patterns of EMS Calls for Assaults in an Urban Environment” at the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) National Conference in Tucson, Arizona in 2003. I also presented the case “Post-Traumatic Psuedoaneurysm of the Internal Carotid Artery” at the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) National Case Presentation Competition in St. Louis, Missouri in 2002.

I have publications in two major peer-reviewed journals, Academic Emergency Medicine and Pre-Hospital Emergency Care. Professional Career:
I currently reside in the Newark, NJ community, and I have been a University Hospital faculty member for approximately five years. During my brief tenure, I have obtained several titles within the hospital’s emergency department including Associate Medical Director, Associate Chief of Emergency Services, Pneumonia Quality Measures Team Director, Director ED QA/PI and active member of the hospital’s Executive QA/PI committee. I delivered the keynote address on “The Business of Medicine,” at the 2007 Region IX SNMA conference and attended the NJ State Health Commissioner’s Roundtable Discussion on Success Strategies in Clinical Performance Improvement. I am a member of the first class of the ACEP Medical Directors’ Academy and upon completion of the certification program, I will have obtained a Masters Degree in Emergency Department Management (MEDM).
Community Outreach:
A local Newark politician has extended a personal invitation for membership in the New Jersey Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. and has requested my participation as a keynote speaker in the Newark Women’s Conference, an organization established to empower the women of Newark. I have also developed a program called “H.A.N.D.S.S.”, Healthcare Assistance for Newark Dedicated to Safe Sports. We plan to work directly with the City of Newark, the Boys and Girls Club and the YMCA to provide free health screenings for Newark’s disadvantaged youth athletes who continue to inspire and show leadership in the face of adversity. I am also the Founder and CEO of TA Med Group, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in Hospital Administration, Healthcare Informatics, Clinical Intelligence, Quality and Process Improvement and Community Outreach. I am actively working with the Violence Prevention Institute (VPI) giving presentations on Violence Prevention and the road to success to Newark’s middle schools.
