Duane Joseph Dyson

Dr. Dyson was born and raised in the city of East Orange, NJ and graduated from Essex Catholic High School in Newark, NJ. After graduation, he attended and received a B.A. from Cornell University. During his third year at Cornell he applied to the early decision program at UMDNJ - New Jersey Medical School where he matriculated. Dr. Dyson received the CIBA-GEIGY award for outstanding community service in his second year of medical school and then received the Foster M. Burnett M.D. Award for outstanding community service in his fourth year.

After graduating from the New Jersey Medical School in 1986, Dr. Dyson completed a one-year internship in Internal Medicine at UMDNJ and then completed a three-year residency in Emergency Medicine at Albert Einstein School of Medicine on the Long Island Jewish Medical Center campus. Dr. Dyson is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and a founding Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Dyson has held numerous academic appointments and has participated in the development of two Emergency Medicine Residency Programs. He is the founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Violence Prevention Institute, Inc which presently works with local Boards of Education, New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission and the New Jersey State Attorney Generals Office. The Violence Prevention Institute provides programs that will effect over 15,000 students in various school districts including West Orange, Newark, Plainfield, East Orange, Orange and Irvington. He is also the co-founder of the New Jersey Research Institute for Emergency Medicine. He also serves on numerous other Non-Profit Boards that are dedicated to Education, Opportunity, Social Change and Economic Empowerment.

Commitment and love for the City of East Orange led him back to East Orange General Hospital where he served as Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Dyson has also held positions such as Director of the following services: Emergency Medical and Surgical Services, House Physician Services and Occupation Health Services over the past eight years.

In Dr. Dyson previous role as Senior Vice President, he provided leadership and coordination for all functions and aspects of Medical Affairs within the Healthcare system. His major role was to re-institute the confidence and respect of those physicians who were dedicated to the success of East Orange General Hospital. He also assumed responsibility for new strategic initiatives and system-wide program development for the Hospital. This included the vital function of working closely with all aspects of governmental authorities as it related to healthcare. During his tenure as Director of Emergency Services and Vice-President of Medical Affairs the Hospital was recognized as one of the 100th most improved hospitals in the United States by Solucients Health Care Information Company.

Other business and community involvement pursuits encompass the following positions and activities: President and CEO of Chelsea Hospital Physician Services and DJD Medical Associates. He has served on the Board of Trustees for Essex Valley Healthcare, (the parent company of East Orange General Hospital), Comprehensive Economic Development Strategic Committee, Physician for AAU golden gloves, Member of One Hundred Black Men Inc, Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity Mu Boule Inc., and was appointed to Governor Richard Codey's NJ Gang Land Security Task Force in October, 2005 and most recently to Governor John Corzines transition team regarding revitalization and economic development with expertise in Public Safety and Health. He was named the Citizen of the year by the National Association of Social Workers in 2006, Outstanding Public Service award by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives 2006, Essex County Outstanding Health Care Professional 2005, Outstanding Citizen of the Year 2003 in East Orange, NJ and Citizen of the Year 2002 in West Orange, NJ. Dr. Dyson has been the keynote speaker and motivational speaker for many prominent organizations and corporations. He has made multiple media appearances both in print, video and television regarding a host of community and health related issues.

He is an avid believer in continuing education for young people and serves as a mentor to students from elementary through graduate school. I try to set myself apart by opening doors of opportunity to many young people and giving them the chance to walk through. I live by these words….
